PRE-MATCH ANALYSIS

Sunday of the World Cup will open up at Samara Arena. Here two teams from the group E will meet each other. Costa Rica and Serbia are ready for lift-off at the World Football Championship as they arrive in Samara, a city that is famous as Russia's aerospace centre. Will the sides play in the defensive manner?

Costa Rica are coming off an historic Brazil 2014 journey, where they were the Cinderella story of the tournament, advancing all the way to the quarter-finals after getting out of a tough group with England, Italy and Uruguay. Los Ticos possessed the second place in the completed qualifying campaign. They earned sixteen points after ten games. Their statistics look like this four wins and draws and two losses. The hosts have been undefeated in all home fixtures including 4:0 against USA. Costa Ricans had a three-point gap over the third Panama and fourth Honduras and have been advanced to Russia.

Preparing to the World Cup, Oscar Ramirez’s team collected some controversial results in the last friendlies. It beat Northern Ireland 3:0, then it lost to two European national squads (England and Belgium) with the total score 6:1.

Serbia are back at the world finals for the first time since 2010, where they failed to advance past the group stage despite defeating Germany 1-0 in their second match. Serbia were drawn with Euro 2016 semi-finalists Wales, Austria, Ireland, Georgia and Moldova. They started off their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Ireland at the Rajko Mitic Stadium and continued this good form with wins over Austria, Georgia, Moldova.

Serbia beat Moldova in Belgrade with goals from Aleksandar Kolarov, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mijat Gacinovic. This consolidated their first position going into their top-of-the group clash with Ireland. They won this match with a 55th-minute goal from Kolarov. Serbia finished with a 1-0 home win against Georgia, and ended top of Group D and therefore qualified for the 2018 tournament.

Possible line-ups

Costa Rica: Keylor Navas; Giancarlo Gonzalez, Oscar Duarte, Johnny Acosta, Cristian Gamboa, Bryan Oviedo; David Guzman, Celso Borges, Bryan Ruiz, Christian Bolanos; Marco Urena

Serbia: Vladimir Stojkovic; Branislav Ivanovic, Nikola Milenkovic, Dusko Tosic, Aleksandar Kolarov; Nemanja Matic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Dusan Tadic, Adem Ljajic, Filip Kostic; Aleksandar Mitrovic

This fixture has no evident favorite. We rely on the last Champions League’s best goalkeeper Keylor Navas or experienced Vladimir Stojkovic who will demonstrate wonderful saves and keep their nets without goals. We recommend to bet on both teams to score (no) with a good coefficient of 1.73.
